Martin Rutherford Technical Director Oceanography and Meteorology Royal Australian Navy 28 May 2009 Processing and Displaying GHRSST data using ESRI ArcGIS Desktop A Royal Australian Navy Perspective
2
Scope n RAN Use of GHRSST products n Processing and Displaying using ArcGIS Desktop n Geo-processing using Model Builder n Web Services
3
RAN Use of GHRSST Products n Safety -Protective clothing on upper deck -Immersion suits for pilots n Freedom of Manoeuvre - OTSR -SST gradients as proxy for currents n Tactical Implications -Acoustic propagation path -Ambient noise from currents, weather, fish and fishing -Submarine Self Noise n Model Validation
4
Why GIS and Web Services n Rich toolset for processing, display and dissemination n Interoperability through standards-based formats n Ability to layer products n Large and growing user community n Use of ESRI ArcGIS suite mandated by the Australian Defence Force
5
Processing and Displaying L4 Products n Download data from GDAC or LTSRF n Convert gridded netCDF to Raster -Creates SST(K) data layer n Convert units as required n Smooth as required n Contour n Display
6
Import as Raster layer

19
Geoprocessing Using Model Builder n All processing can be chained in a model n Run model from ArcGIS desktop session n Export model as executable script
20
Publishing GHRSST as a Web Service n Export geo-processing as python script n Add python ftp module n Export raster to geo-database n Publish raster as Web Map Service -Access from internet browser -Access from GIS client n Run as scheduled service n Option is to have data ftp ‘pushed’
