Astr Astronomy Astr- Greek origin for stars nomy- Greek origin for arrangement Astronomy is the study of matter in outer space. Astronomers study the movement of planets and stars and the distance they are from Earth. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Milky_Way_Galaxy. jpg

Astr Astronomy cont... The stars are so far away from each other that light would need years to travel from one star to another. That is why astronomers measure distances in light years. Light Years: The distance a ray of light would travel in one year (6 trillion mi, 9.4 trillion km) https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Milky_Way_Galaxy. jpg

It takes 8 minutes for the light of the sun to reach Earth. This means the sun is 8 light minutes away from us. If the Sun were to disappear, how long would it take us to know that? http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/756752main_20130620-m2.9flare- orig_full.jpg

The Universe Universe: is all the space and matter. Galaxies, solar systems, sun, moons, planets, asteroids, meteoroids and comets are all part of our Universe. mets. Universe Galaxy Solar system Sun/star, Planets, Moons, Asteroid, Meteoroids, Comets.

Galaxies What is a Galaxy? A Galaxy is a group of stars, matter and gas, all held together by the force of gravity. * Example: Milky Way Galaxy *Gravity: An attractive force between objects that have mass. http://images.slideplayer.com/23/6863643/slides/slide_27.jpg

The Solar System Solar system - A collection of planets and their moons that orbit around ONE star. ●The Planets: According to the International Astronomical Union, an object to be a planet, it needs to be a round ball/sphere, big enough(Sorry PLUTO :) and orbits the sun.* Moon: Is an object that orbits a planet. Star: A huge object of superheated gas. *http://www.smithsonianeducation.org/educators/lesson_plans/universe/smithsonian_siyc_spring2010.pdf

Meteoroids: SMALL pieces of rock and metal that are in space The Solar System http://www.bridgendastronomicalsociety.co.uk/images/meteor.jpg Meteor: A meteoroid that burns up in Earth’s atmosphere Meteorite: A meteoroid that reaches Earth’s surface

The Solar System http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/thumbnails/im age/edu_asteroid_large.jpg Asteroid: A small piece of rock and metal that may or may not orbit the Sun ( The Asteroid belt is between Mars and Jupiter)

Comet : a piece of rock, gas, and ice that revolves around the sun (it has a tail) The Solar System http://www.space.com/images/i/000/009/378/i02/halleys-comet- 1986.jpg?1304371881?interpolation=lanczos-none&downsize=640:*
