Seurat was born into a wealthy family in Paris. He studied art under a sculptor. His first major painting was rejected for exhibit by the Paris Salon so he allied himself with independent artists of Paris.

Scientists were studying color, optical effects, and perception. Chevreul produced a color wheel. He also discovered that 2 colors juxtaposed or slightly overlapping would have the effect of another color from a distance.
