Opening Work: List the seven skills we talked about in the previous health unit How can we use these seven skills when it comes to our social and emotional health? What does it mean for someone to have SELF AWARENESS?

Recognize your emotions and the affect they have on you and others around you. Know your strengths and limitations. Respect yourself and your values.

Activity Each group will get an emotion… I want you to imagine that you have a younger brother or sister around the age of six. Explain to them how they would know if they felt that emotion. – Example: How would their body feel? What expression might be one their face? How might this emotion affect him or her and the others around him or her?

Discussion Questions Was this an easy or difficult task? Why do you think so? Are there emotions that make life more challenging? If so what are they? Raise your hand if you have ever had an emotion sneak up on you Raise your hand if you have ever been around someone who is so angry or excited that he or she is out of control

Activity Take 30 seconds and list the health skills you think depend of self-awareness What can a person do if he or she isn’t able to identify how he or she feels about something? Scenario: Your younger brother or sister is disappointed in something that happened, and he or she is claiming that they cannot do anything right. He or she is very discouraged and wants to quit everything. What would you say or do with your sibling???

Activity How does self-awareness benefit an athlete? Each group will get a piece of paper that describes a person. Discuss how self awareness would benefit the person described Self-awareness worksheet – Who knows what a “blind spot” is? – How do people find out about their blind spots?

Reflection Question Tell members at your table one way you plan to enhance your self-awareness REFLECTION QUESTION: – How do you think self awareness benefits high school students???
