MORE Story Elements
2
Foreshadowing A hint about an event that will occur later in the story. A reader can make predictions based on the information given. Example: In Star Wars, Episode II, Obi-Wan is quoted as saying to Anakin, "Why do I get the feeling you’re going to be the death of me?" He is later killed by Anakin. Example Note: “Infer” means to read “between the lines” – inferring can help you make predictions.
3
Author’s Purpose Authors have a purpose in mind when writing: entertain, debate, analyze, persuade, inform, etc. They consider their audience when deciding on a subject, purpose for writing, and the tone and style in which to write.
4
Dialogue The words that characters speak aloud. Example: Susie told Jeff that she was going to the mall. VS Susie told Jeff, “I’m going to the mall.”
5
Tone Shows the writer’s attitude toward his or her subject (humorous, serious, impatient, sad, etc.).
6
Symbol Something concrete—such as a person, place, or object—that signifies something abstract, something more than just itself, such as a concept or an idea. Examples: Examples Dove is a symbol of peace. Red rose or red color stands for love or romance. Black color is a symbol that represents evil or death. The American flag represents freedom.
7
