ARE THE INSPIRED SCRIPTURES PROFITABLE AND SUFFICIENT OR ARE THEY NOT?
2
2 TIMOTHY 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness....
3
PROFITABLE FOR... DOCTRINE – the doctrine [teaching] of Christ Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds. (2 John 9-11)
4
PROFITABLE FOR... DOCTRINE – the apostles’ doctrine And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. (Acts 2:42)
5
PROFITABLE FOR... DOCTRINE – the apostles’ doctrine For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him, God also bearing witness both with signs and wonders, with various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will? (Heb. 2:2-4)
6
PROFITABLE FOR... REPROOF – “evidence” Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. (Heb. 11:1)
7
PROFITABLE FOR... REPROOF – implies the use of reason "Come now, and let us reason together," Says the Lord, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool." (Isa. 1:18)
8
PROFITABLE FOR... REPROOF – implies the use of reason And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, "Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you." (Acts 24:24-25)
9
PROFITABLE FOR... REPROOF – must reason from God’s word....holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict. (Titus 1:9)
10
PROFITABLE FOR... REPROOF – must reason correctly Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (2 Tim. 2:15)....as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. (2 Peter 3:16)
11
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Jesus used Scripture to correct misconceptions of the Sadducees. Jesus answered and said to them, "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.... But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not read what was spoken to you by God, saying, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living." (Matt. 22:29, 31-33)
12
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Jesus used Scripture to correct misconceptions of His disciples. Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. (Luke 24:44-45)
13
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Paul used Scripture to correct those who perverted the gospel. I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. (Gal. 1:6-7)
14
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Paul used Scripture to correct those who perverted the gospel. Tell me, you who desire to be under the law, do you not hear the law? For it is written that Abraham had two sons: the one by a bondwoman, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, which things are symbolic.
15
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Paul used Scripture to correct those who perverted the gospel. For these are the two covenants: the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar-- for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children-- but the Jerusalem above is free, which is the mother of us all.
16
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Paul used Scripture to correct those who perverted the gospel. For it is written: "Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate has many more children Than she who has a husband."
17
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Paul used Scripture to correct those who perverted the gospel. Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are children of promise. But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what does the Scripture say?
18
PROFITABLE FOR... CORRECTION – Paul used Scripture to correct those who perverted the gospel. "Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman." So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman but of the free. (Gal. 4:21-31)
19
PROFITABLE FOR... INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUS- NESS – Righteousness is not an accident waiting for a place to happen. My tongue shall speak of Your word, For all Your commandments are righteousness. (Psa. 119:172)
20
PROFITABLE FOR... INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUS- NESS – None are righteous through their own efforts, alone. What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin. As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one; [There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God.
21
PROFITABLE FOR... INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUS- NESS – None are righteous through their own efforts, alone. [ They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one." "Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit"; "The poison of asps is under their lips";
22
PROFITABLE FOR... INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUS- NESS – None are righteous through their own efforts, alone. ["Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness." ["Their feet are swift to shed blood; [Destruction and misery are in their ways; [And the way of peace they have not known." ["There is no fear of God before their eyes."
23
PROFITABLE FOR... INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUS- NESS – None are righteous through their own efforts, alone. Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. (Rom. 3:9-19)
24
PROFITABLE FOR... INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUS- NESS – God bestows righteousness on the condition of faith. For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith." (Rom. 1:16-17)
25
PROFITABLE FOR... INSTRUCTION IN RIGHTEOUS- NESS – Faith comes through hearing the word of God. So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Rom. 10:17)
