The Scientific Method

What is the scientific method? Collection of steps Attempt to solve a problem or answer a question Minimize the influence of bias points of view Tests theories for accuracy Dispel the myth

Scientific Method has 5 main steps 1.State the question OR Identify the problem 2. Research the question or problem 3. Create a hypothesis 4. Test the hypothesis 5. Draw conclusions

Step 1 State the question Identify the Problem Isolate ONE thing that you will address in your experimentation Are you looking for an answer? Are you trying to solve a problem?

Step 2 Research As the scientist, YOU are the expert. You will be asked questions The expectation is that you will know the answers. Don’t guess Don’t make things up Go to the library and do your research!

Step 3 Formulate a hypothesis An educated response Based on your research, what do you think the answer to the problem is? Based on your research, what do you think the solution to the problem is?

Step 4 Testing the Hypothesis This is the largest step. Develop the experiment Select needed materials Identify & isolate variables Make observations Organize the data

Step 5 Drawing conclusions Is your hypothesis correct or incorrect? Using your data, you must validate the hypothesis if its right.

Step 5 Drawing conclusions If its incorrect, you must make inferences that explain why its wrong. make suggestions as to what can done differently retest
