10
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry What bothered applicants in previous years?
11
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry The timing of recruitment “Bad timing - is in middle of exams.” “….should be carried out a lot earlier as it is too close to the final exams which makes it extremely stressful…….” “….. It would be better if we could do it at the end of May / start of June when exams are over………”
12
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry Meet the trainers “The meet the trainer day is very intense and some trainers left early, meaning it was difficult to see all the trainers that I had planned.” "There was not enough time between the actually list of trainers being published and meet the trainer event especially when some students had extremely busy university timetable between these two events.”
13
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry The accuracy of the matching “….It is not explained specifically how the matching process works…….” ”No one actually explained to us at any point how trainers and trainees match.”
14
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry
15
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry Matching – the hard facts “Potential of number 2 choices by each trainer to drop right down the list.” "The trainer and the trainee seem to have no idea how high on each others lists they are.” “Risk of not matching with a trainer you would like to work most with …” “I don’t know where I stand with practices, they may interview 50 people and I have no idea if I am on their list so this makes it difficult to decide who to put on mine.” “No guarantee of jobs and sometimes unaware if the VT trainer is interested or not …...” “….there are not enough practices ….”
16
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry The matching / appointing system “Very competitive and most trainers interview candidates purely based on their CV which sometimes can be very misleading as interviewing everyone will make it fair to both the trainer and the candidate.” “It should be made clear if trainers are allowed to disclose whether or not they are putting you on their list before submitting it, and this should be standardised so that everyone does so therefore all applicants are in the same position.” “The 3 week interview period is too long. There is a lot of underhand matching that goes on. It is very stressful.” “Too much travelling to different places.”
17
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry Fairness “People going behind others back and telling who is on their list and who is not. Some people already know they will be a trainers number one choice so is a waste of a vote for others who may put this trainer as their number one.” “….. Also some trainers tell people that they are their number 1 choice which defeats the purpose of this process.”
18
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry Non-Scottish students taking some places “Scotland graduates should be given preference for their VT as there is just enough for us. “Thank you very much for a job in Scotland”
19
Educational Solutions for Workforce Development Dentistry Mis-information “It can lead to a great deal of rumour spreading between classmates.” “People make matches outwith the system.”
