Are you struggling in your classes?
2
Are you the top student in your class?
3
Are you somewhere in between?
4
Here are some tips and tricks for academic success for those struggling, at the top of their class, and somewhere in between.
5
Know your Grades Learn how to use the student portal. Log in using your 6 digit ID and attach to @studnet.smjuhsd.org use the same password used to log onto PVHS computers. If your teacher does not put their grades on Aeries (Student Portal), ask if their grades are posted online. Ask how to access them. If your teacher posts their grades on the wall in their classroom, then look at your grades every time it is updated. If the grades are not posted online or in the classroom, ask the teacher for a grade summary every couple of weeks. Make sure your assignments and tests are recorded accurately.
6
Attend Class Every day Make sure you attend class every day. One missed day will put you behind in all classes. Make doctor and dentist appointments after school. If you are sick, stay home, but make sure you ask for any work you missed when you return. You can also: – Ask a friend to get the work you missed so you are prepared when you return. – Check the website too, many teachers list their daily assignments on their web page. – E-mail the teacher and ask for the assignment. Teacher e- mails are available on the web site.
7
Class Time Take meaningful notes so you can refer to them when you are doing homework. Be alert and ready to learn. Don’t sit next to your friend if you know they will distract you. If students around you are a distraction, ask the teacher, in private, to change your seating assignment. Ask questions in class. If you are too afraid, then ask them after class. Answer questions asked in class by your teacher.
8
Get Help Immediately Ask your teacher when they are available to help you. Most teachers are available throughout the day but times vary. – Before School – Lunch – After school PVHS offers tutoring in the library Monday through Thursday from 2:30 to 4:30. The tutors are teachers at PVHS. Form a study group with other students in the same class and meet after school in the library. Ask your teacher for extra practice worksheets.
9
Homework Talk to friends to compare notes and concepts learned in class. Schedule time for homework every day/night. (Just like your Sports practices – homework is practice.) Turn off your cell phone. The buzz buzz IS A DISTRACTION. Do homework for understanding, not just for credit. Don’t procrastinate!
10
Remember Start your classes using these strategies. Keep using these strategies throughout the year. Don’t give up!!
