SIXTIES TV A CHC 2D Canadian History Presentation

New Technology in 1962, the world of television changed when the first colour broadcast was made colour televisions were much more expensive than black and white but soon the American networks were making colour the standard for every prime time television show because of this, even shows that had been cancelled were in demand because smaller stations needed colour programs that could fill the time around prime time as cable expanded in the 70s and 80s, these programs continued to be used… and some are still on tv today

60s TV Shows Star Trek would never leave television; it’s on every day somewhere in the world

60s TV Shows The Brady Bunch would return periodically through the 90s… and more Americans knew its theme than “The Star Spangled Banner”

60s TV Shows Holy Batmania! Batman was such a huge hit in 1966 that a feature film was rushed into theatres that summer — but adding Batgirl was not enough to prevent ratings from sliding into cancellation

60s TV Shows The Green Hornet did not get a lot of syndicated broadcast but it IS significant for introducing us to a major star of the early seventies….

60s TV Shows Dark Shadows also did not go into much syndication, but the daily soap opera would heavily influence the world of vampires

60s TV Shows The Munsters put a much different spin on the supernatural (as did The Addams Family), turning them into the basis of a sitcom

60s TV Shows Bewitched was another supernatural sitcom… and one that changed its male lead between years without losing its audience

60s TV Shows The Monkees were an artificial band of actors and musicians that sang songs written by Neil Diamond and others — and pioneered the music video

60s TV Shows Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In was responsible for launching the career of comedians (such as Goldie Hawn and guest Lily Tomlin) and some notable catchphrases (“sock it to me,” “say goodnight, Dick”)

60s TV Shows The Man From U.N.C.L.E. cashed in on the spy movie craze teaming up an American and Soviet agent to stop threats (but The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. wasn’t as popular)

60s TV Shows Get Smart was a parody of Man From U.N.C.L.E. and the rest of the spy craze, written by Mel Brooks & Buck Henry

60s TV Shows The Wild Wild West dealt with spies a different way: James T. West & Artemis Gordon were Secret Service Agents of the 1860s

60s TV Shows In Britain, The Avengers had agents John Steed & Emma Peel protect the U.K. from threats that were science fiction-oriented

60s TV Shows In Britain, The Punisher was even more bizarre as a former agent was trapped on an island, known only as a number from now on

60s TV Shows North America would have to wait a few years before Britain’s newest stars would appear on their television screens…

60s TV Shows Finally, The Flintstones put animation into prime time…

60s TV Shows …and Sesame Street changed public television & educational programming forever

THANK CANADA part of the reason television signals improved so much in the 1960s was TelStar, the first communications satellite — and the product of Canada

Biggest Change the biggest change in television, however, came from outside the industry, rather than from within Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) were upset that many of the programs aimed at children were sponsored by products that were aimed at kids — like sugar cereals and toys the U.S. government regulated that, from now on, kids television shows could not advertise products related to their production (that is, by the sponsors or with the characters) this would not change until a Canadian toy company forced them to change in the early 80s
