2 Federalist views v Anti-Federalist Views Federalist Protect States & Nation Maintain order – Law Regulate trade Guarantee Rights Guarantee national debt Stabilize money and economy Anti-Federalist Would endanger peoples freedoms Center of power was to far away from people. Representatives would not know situations at home. Worry over “Necessary and Proper” Laws Wanted the “BILL OF RIGHTS” added to the Constitution.

3 Federalist Papers 85 Essays written from 1787 to 1788. Authored by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Jay. The essays were written in favor of ratifying the Constitution. The essays were addressed to the people of New York state, but were published in newspapers throughout the 13 states Pointed out the new nations weaknesses and explained how a strong government could solve the problems of those weaknesses.

4 Ratification Federalist mounted a good public relations campaign. Strongly supported by George Washington and Ben Franklin. Federalist added the “Bill of Rights” – won support Approved in many states by only a few votes. Virginia ratified it by 8 votes, New York by 3 votes. Rhode Island was the last state to ratify the Constitution.
