9 4. KIASU CULTURE  Singaporeans are very competitive in nature, wanting to be the best at something, if not everything. Hence, we are known to be very “kiasu”  For example, Singaporean parents send their children to many tuition classes, regardless how expensive they are, just to ensure that their children will do well in their studies and top the class/school in examinations.

ARCHITECTURE  Being home to many different ethnic groups, there are many forms of architecture in Singapore, ranging from historic to modern.  It is not unusual to spot iconic shop houses of the past in the vicinity of state-of-the-art skyscrapers.  Examples of historic architecture: Old parliament Hall, Victoria Theatre, Raffles Hotel etc.

12 5. ARCHITECTURE  Joo Chiat/Katong is known as the home of the Peranakans.  In this charming corner of Eastern Singapore, many heritage shophouses and quaint stores and eateries can be seen, showing off unique traditional Peranakan culture.

13 6. ABBREVIATIONS  Singaporeans love things to be sweet and short.  Hence, abbreviations have blended into our everyday lives, making them much simpler.  For example, Singaporeans would rather say “The GSS is coming up soon!” rather than “The Great Singapore Sale is coming up soon!”.  “Are you voting for PAP or WP?”  “Are you driving to school via PIE, ECP or MCE?”
