4 Lesson: Poetry Analysis Poetry is a genre (or type) of literature that uses rhythm to create a mood or tell a story using imagery Strategies for reading poetry  LISTEN  LISTEN: Poetry has a rhythm to the words so it is often meant to be read out loud  IDENTIFY  IDENTIFY the speaker (not necessarily the poet)  READ  READ in sentences (do not stop at the end of the line – stop at punctuation)  PICTURE  PICTURE the images being evoked (why those images??)  DECIPHER  DECIPHER the intended meaning
