LINE Definition: The most basic design 'tool'. A line has length, width, tone, and texture. It may divide space, define a form, describe contour, suggest direction. Examples: "A line is a dot that went for a walk." - Paul Klee.
2
Different types of lines
Outlines made by the edges of objects. Contour lines describe the shape.
3
Gesture lines are energetic and capture movement.
Sketch lines capture the apperence of an object
4
Implied lines are not actually drawn lines but create the illusion of line from the distance.
Cross hatching lines layered lines that create value.
5
TEXTURE Definition: Texture refers to the surface quality, both simulated and actual. Simulated means the illusion of texture, whether it is rough, smooth, bumpy, prickly….visual texture is done with color, line and value to help you feel with your eyes. Actual or real texture would be something you could literally feel with touching. An example would be a clay project/sculpture or a collage of various textural items.

VALUE Line is used to create lights and darks in your picture. See all the different types of lines used for the different areas in this picture.
14
The amount of lines will create your light and dark contrasts (value)

The different lines in different directions, lines closer together or curved and straight will separate the areas in your picture.

Dark areas vs light areas…Contour lines?

Line Assignment You will be drawing a landscape/animal scene and you are to use all different types of lines to show textures and value in your drawing. You must include a foreground, middle ground and background in your landscape/animal drawing. We will be drawing the basic outline with pencil and then going in with marker to make our textural lines. The final step will be to put a watercolor wash over your line drawing. This will be subtle color.
