The Significance of Science
Victor F. Weisskopf 14 APRIL 1972 SCIENCE,VOL.176 “More concerted and systematic effort toward presentation and popularization of science would be helpful in many respects; it would provide a potent antidote to overspecialization; it would bring out clearly what is significant in current research, and it would make science a more integral part of the culture of today.” IPPOG Meeting #11, Krakow, November 2016 News from IPPOG

New Members - Slovenia New countries, laboratories, experiments engaged in all fields of particle physics are welcome to strengthen IPPOG further. Slovenia voted in as 27th country in IPPOG Particle Physics in Slovenia is based at the Jožef Stefan Institute in Ljubljana, providing a framework also including Universities of Ljubljana, Nova Gorica, and Maribor. Andrej Gorisek is representing Slovenia in IPPOG and is with us today in Krakow – Welcome! not yet updated.. IPPOG Meeting #11, Krakow, November 2016

New Representative – The Netherlands
Charles Timmermans has been appointed by NIKHEF as Netherlands new representative to IPPOG; taking over from Sasha Caron. Charles started HiSPARC in Nijmegen, a program for measuring cosmic rays in schools that has received the ALTRAN award for innovation in 2004. Charles received the EPS HEPP outreach prize in 2007. Vacant Representative – Bulgaria
Stefan Piperov – is now assistant professor at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, and therefore no longer the Bulgarian representative. As Bulgaria has not declared any successor, Stefan is still the nominal contact for Bulgaria and is answering IPPOG related s, and is thus still figuring on the IPPOG member web page. Marge and I will try to follow up with Bulgaria. IPPOG Meeting #11, Krakow, November 2016

Expressed interest - China
Zhi-zhong Xing from IHEP Beijing participated to the IPPOG Fall meeting 2015 at CERN to learn who we are and what we do. China is interested in joining IPPOG once a proper structure exists (i.e. the MoU is set). But China feels not yet being ready to embark in new projects reaching out to high schools “because the correct manpower and channel are lacking” Zhi-zhong Xing continues following our activities as IPPOG associates, and intends to meet Marge at ICHEP 2016 in Chicago. Expressed – Belle II Belle II at KEK, Japan is interested in joining IPPOG. Toru Iijima, the Belle II outreach coordinator, and Zdenek Dolezal, Belle II outreach member, are discussing a potential membership at the level of the Belle II collaboration board: “I am happy to write you that the Belle II collaboration expressed a wish to become an IPPOG member. Since, as you write, IPPOG is in the transition, we have not concluded the final vote - for this the MoU should be available, the fee known, etc. However general attitude of various bodies is very positive and we have been charged with conducting further negotiations with you. Zdenek“ “The Belle II collaboration has rather strong interest in joining this activity. Personally, Zdenek and I will attend ICHEP2016 and hope to talk to some of you closely. Also we will be able also to join the meeting at CERN in this fall. If possible and arrowed, we may hear the open sessions of the Krakow meeting via videoconference. Toru” IPPOG Meeting #11, Krakow, November 2016

MoU After years of effort, first by Marge and I alone, then with the important support from Barbora, creating a proto-MoU document that was good enough to start detailed discussions with CERN Legal Service over the last five months, we have finally an MoU ready to be distributed in IPPOG. Many meetings and many hours involving three lawyers from CERN resulted in the actual and hopefully ready Draft of the IPPOG Collaboration MoU. We will discuss this MoU at the Krakow meeting and hopefully, we can decide that this is what we would like to base our Collaboration up on. IPPOG Meeting #11, Krakow, November 2016 News from IPPOG

Mandate of current Chairs
In December 2015: “Marge and Hans-Peter were re-nominated for the period of one extra year, effective January 1st, 2016 (until the end of 2016, when we expect the MoU process to be complete and a minimal defined set of signatures collected by this time). Although it has not been voted, but it was suggested that in the Krakaw meeting the procedure for the election in the Autumn CERN meeting of the co-chairs for the next period should be launched.” Marge and I propose a search committee to be formed that shall propose the IPPOG leadership from 2017 onwards, with a vote during the Fall 2016 meeting.
