CELL STRUCTURE Eukaryotic cells contain many organelles: small structures within a cell, sometimes surrounded by a membrane.
2
2 Basic Structure of a Cell
3
CELL MEMBRANE - surrounds the cell - - controls what moves into and out of the cell -
4
CYTOPLASM (cytosol) - jelly-like substance in cells that supports the organelles
5
NUCLEUS - Control center of the cell -Directs all cell activities
6
NUCLEAR MEMBRANE -Surrounds the nucleus -allows materials in and out of nucleus
7
NUCLEOLUS - Found inside the nucleus -Makes ribosomes
8
DNA DNA CHROMATIN - Found inside the nucleus -Made of DNA -Gives directions to make proteins -Passes traits to new cells
9
RIBOSOMES - Makes proteins -Found on the ER and in the cytoplasm
10
MITOCHONDRIA - Power house of the cell - Changes food and oxygen into energy
11
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ER) -Moves materials around the cell -
12
GOLGI BODY (complex, apparatus, structure) - Packages and transports proteins from the ER
13
VACUOLE -Stores food, water and waste -Large in plants -Small in animals
14
LYSOSOMES - Breaks down food, waste, and worn-out cell parts -Common in animals -Rare in plants
15
CENTRIOLE - Only in animals -Helps cells split in two during cell division
16
CELL WALL - Surrounds only plant cells -provides support and structure
17
CHLOROPLAST - Makes food in plants through photosynthesis
