7.2 – Eukaryotic Cell Structure
2
Cell Boundary (Animal & Plant) O Cell Membrane O Function: O Controls what enters or exits the cell O Semipermeable – only allows certain materials in or out
3
O Structure O Double layer of lipid molecules called phospholipid bilayer O Phospholipids: O Polar heads face outside – like water (hydrophillic) O Nonpolar tails face center – hate water (hydrophobic)
6
Proteins on a cell membrane O Channels / Pumps – move material in/out of cell O Markers – indentify the cell (name tags) O Receptors – Receive messages from other cells
8
-Cell Wall – PLANT CELL ONLY! O Function O Surrounds cell membrane O Provides support and protection for cell O Structure O Made of cellulose O Porous – allows gases and water through
9
Inside the Cell
10
O Two Areas: 1. Nucleus O Function: O Control center for cell and contains the cell’s DNA O Structure: O Nuclear Envelope – outer covering of nucleus O Nuclear Pores – openings in envelope allow materials in/out. O Nucleolus – condensed area where ribosomes are made
12
2. Cytoplasm Function: Where organelles are found Structure: Gel-like fluid, containing proteins, carbohydrates, and other molecules
