What The Experts Say What The Employers Say I think the sort of integrative work you do in your general education program is often what our association says ‘we hope people will work towards this’ and you’re already there. CARYN MCTIGHE MUSIL Former Senior Vice President of the Association of American Colleges and Universities Otterbein outcomes—like critical thinking, the ability to communicate clearly and solve complex problems—are more important to 93 percent of employers than a student’s specific field of study.* *SOURCE: “It Takes More Than a Major: Employer Priorities for College Learning and Student Success,” conducted on behalf of the Association of American Colleges and Universities by Hart Research Associates. So how does the class work? SYE-Senior Year Experience The ART of SYE provides time and space for senior students to Act, Reflect, and address the Transition to life after Otterbein. Designed for seniors, SYE asks students to shift their framework: from depth to breadth, from student to professional and citizen, from security to transition. SYE is a space in the curriculum that challenges students to pull together their knowledge and skills in ways that they can apply what they have learned to contemporary issues and challenges, take time to reflect on their education as a whole and its future uses, and identify and use resources as they move towards the transition to life beyond college. Overarching themes. Vary by course and instructor.

So how does the class work? SYE 4016-Environmental Sustainability This class is intended to have students gain “real world” experience related to decision-making and project management issues typically encountered by environmental professionals and citizens. The structure of the class emphasizes the multidisciplinary approach to solving environmental problems with participants having varied levels of experience. Specific projects and case studies are selected to demonstrate that economic and social issues are often much more difficult than the environmental solutions. This class is open to all students and is recommended for Sustainability Studies majors. “Welcome to your first job.”
