Causes of a low population growth 1.Low Death Rate: Higher standard of hygiene (clean water/environment) Better nutrition (balanced diet) Better medical/health care (hospitals, clinic, doctors) 2. Low Birth Rate: Later marriage (lowers fertility rate) Fewer marriages Preference for smaller families

Consequences of a low population growth rate: Ageing population (more older people) Higher taxes (fewer taxpayers so everyone pays more to fund public facilities and social services) Smaller talent pool (less people with skills; may need immigrants)

Managing low population growth rate: Encourage marriage and child bearing. How? (textbook p. 25) Meet the needs of the elderly. How? (textbook p. 25) Extending working life (people retire at a later age because there aren’t enough young workers) Financial help from the government (retirement funds, pensions, housing allowances)
