3 The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to understand the entrepreneurial ecosystem (EE) of two small European countries – Spain and Portugal -- with significant intellectual capital but very small local markets for their products. Spain/Portugal: Start up Strategy

4 WHAT/ WHEN/ WHO? One week travel preceded by 2 pre departure academic sessions on campus, as well as an orientation meeting Travel during Summer I (May 11-20, 2014) 4 credits Pre-travel Academic Sessions and Elective Abroad Orientation meeting (on campus) are required

5 ELIGIBILITY Who’s eligible for the Spain/Portugal course? First Year (Rising Sophomore) Rising Juniors Rising Seniors Other selection criteria: sincere interest in start-ups, Spain, Portugal, and academically strong students

6 Pre-travel academic sessions – Saturday March 29 (9am-2pm) – Saturday April 12 (9am-2pm) Electives Abroad Orientation Sessions – TBA Post-course sessions – Wrap up completed in country (final project due June 23 rd, 2014) Program fee: $2,850 – Program fee includes: accommodations, breakfast, ground and intra country transportation, guide in country, program planned meals and cultural excursions in country & pre travel academic materials – Not included: international flight, visa costs, personal expenses, meals not covered in program & tuition Tuition is a separate charge, issued from and paid to SFS What you need to know: Spain/Portugal: Start up Strategy

7 What you need to know: Travel Dates: May 11-20, 2014 – arrive in Lisbon on May 12 th ; depart Barcelona on May 20 th Travel Cities: Lisbon, Madrid, Barcelona Min/Max. number of students: 16/26 Deliverables – In-class presentations for pre-departure sessions – Daily in-country journals – Student-led in-country daily debrief sessions – Consulting project engagement contracts – Consulting project final report Spain/Portugal: Start up Strategy

14 APPLICATION: IMPORTANT DATES Application is now open - http://educationabroad.babson.edu http://educationabroad.babson.edu Application closes Thursday October 24 th (11:59pm) Placements sent (to Babson email): Friday, November 1 st Student Acceptance deadline: Friday, November 8 th – Acceptance Paperwork – Deposit check ($500), goes towards program fee – Copy of passport- submitted online Waitlist Application opens: Monday, November 4 th Final program fee payment (balance) due: Friday March 28 th Glavin Office registers students for the Electives Abroad

15 STUDENT FINANCIAL SERVICES

16 Payments, Stipends, and Alternative Loans Any deposit to confirm a student’s enrollment (and the subsequent balance of the program fee) needs to be paid directly by the student to the Glavin Office Tuition will be paid directly to SFS (4 credits = $5,440) Up to $2,000 Education Abroad Grants will be offered to current need-based institutional grant recipients and full-tuition scholarship recipients to help with the cost of the program Students who receive a full tuition scholarship can use a portion of their scholarship to pay for the tuition cost Students can choose to borrow a Federal Parent PLUS loan or a private loan to help cover additional expenses

17 Future Academic Planning If students are enrolling in a Babson elective abroad during winter or summer, they may qualify for a variance from the flat rate tuition during their senior year, based on a reduced course load. If a student does receive a variance for reduced tuition, need-based institutional grants would not be impacted. However, full tuition scholarships would be adjusted accordingly.
