ENDOCRINE SYSTEM NOTES (Fill in notes using presentation)
2
ENDOCRINE SYSTEM: Endocrine system- Regulates growth, development, & your body’s daily activities. ENDOCRINE GLANDS= glands that secrete hormones to cause changes in the body.
3
ENDOCRINE GLANDS: Hypothalamus= A part of nervous system & endocrine system. Controls body temp & use of water. Pituitary Gland= Small gland at base of brain. Controls growth, metabolism, reproduction, & most other glands= MASTER GLAND!
4
Overactive Pituitary Gland???
5
World’s tallest man: Robert Wadlow (Feb 1918- Jul 1940) Measured at 8’ 11.” Shoe measures @ 18 inches long
6
World’s tallest woman: Zeng Jinlian Measured 8 ft.1.75. Had scoliosis so she could have been taller.
7
Adrenal Glands= Above each kidney. Controls metabolism & your response to stress levels (releases adrenaline). Adrenal
8
GLANDS contd. Thyroid Gland= in the front of the neck, controls metabolism. Pancreas= Behind stomach. Controls digestion & blood sugar levels.
9
Ovaries= Release estrogen & progesterone. Activated in puberty. Testes= Produces testosterone & sperm. Activated in puberty.
10
HORMONES: 4. Puberty- period of sexual development during when a person becomes physically able to reproduce. 5. Hormones- Chemical messengers released in bloodstream that stimulate a response in your body. Checks and balances (if the level is low, your body will release more of a hormone to balance things out…homeostasis.) The release of a hormone will stimulate/ cause a response in your body. 6. Release testosterone= production of sperm.
11
HORMONES: 7. Adrenaline= Controls “fight or flight response.” Increases heart rate, breathing rate, etc. 8. What three hormones influence the male? A) Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)= produced by pituitary gland. Stimulates estrogen in females (egg maturation), & sperm production in males.
12
Hormones 2. Luteinizing Hormone= Female- stimulates ovulation. Males- stimulates sperm & testosterone production. 3. Testosterone= Male sex hormone, controls development of male sex traits
13
HORMONES contd. 9. What two hormones influence the female? A) Progesterone= Female sex hormone, controls development of female sex traits B) Estrogen= Female sex hormone, female sex traits, and production of ova (egg).
14
SEX CELLS 10. OVA= female sex cell (egg) 11. SPERM= male sex cell 12. OVA + SPERM = BABY!! =
