Andrei Nomerotski 1 Flex Status & AID A.Nomerotski, 18 June 2010
2
Andrei Nomerotski 2 Outline Flex status Next steps AID
3
Andrei Nomerotski 3 General Information Flex u Accommodates 6 sensors MIMOSA26 u Dimensions 205.9 mm x 40.5 mm u Polyimide, 50 micron thick u Two metal layers, 17 um base copper s then plate another 25 um onto this surface copper and through the holes s Top: gold/nickel, wedge wire bonding compatible u Cover layer with total thickness of 50 um s 25 um polyimide film s 25 um acrylic adhesive Connector: MOLEX 80 pins 6 ears for mechanical alignment, hole diameter 2 mm Stiffener under connector 24.4 mm x 24 mm x 0.4 mm
4
Andrei Nomerotski 4 Connector MOLEX 80 pins u 0.4 mm pitch, 1 mm height (when plugged) u Board part: plug Molex 502430-8010 u Flex part: receptacle Molex 502426-8010 u Gold plated, durable 30 cycles u 0.3 Amp/contact, 50 V max
5
Andrei Nomerotski 5 Flex Status 12 flexes received from Graphic u 8 in Oxford u 2 in Strasbourg u 2 in Bristol
6
Andrei Nomerotski 6 Issues with Flexes Overetching of lines u 75 40 micron, Graphic not forthcoming to fix problems Assembly QA in Oxford
7
Andrei Nomerotski 7 Other Flex Vendors Same design sent for quotation to u Cicorel (Switzerland) u OptiPrint (Switzerland) u Datex Instruments (US) Received quotation from OptiPrint u ~£2500 for 20 flexes – same as Graphic We asked to repeat the quotation, ask if should contact french sales office if ordered through Strasbourg
8
Andrei Nomerotski 8 Assembly Procedure 1.Glue stiffener Need a (simple) tool for precision 2.Solder components Sometimes solder wicks under polyimide to bonding pads 3.Wash 4.Test (components, clock)
9
Andrei Nomerotski 9 Next Steps Kapton flex u Check bonding u Check clock propagation u Decide how to proceed Flex layout u Investigate variations of layout (Pete) s Mirrored design s Traces under M26 s Thinner traces(?) Order from OptiPrint when PCB version is working u Order now?
10
Andrei Nomerotski 10 AID Layout Draft 0 prepared by Stephanie Yang

Andrei Nomerotski 11 AID Layout
12
Andrei Nomerotski 12 AID: Plans First sort out ladder movements then other things u Decide on degrees of freedom in Station 2 u Decide on orientation of ladders s Horizontal? Buy several stages for characterization u Assemble one station? Fix dimensions u Distance between ladders, angle, stations etc How to accommodate other users? Prepare full design u Cables u Light tightness u Monitoring u Target u Air cooling/ Temperature monitoring
13
Andrei Nomerotski 13 AID : Next Steps Change vertical stage in station 2 Add rotation for one ladder in Station 2 FEA of standalone ladder to understand how rigid it is u Vertical orientation u Horizontal orientation u Different length, up to 25 cm? u Conclude if ladder needs a frame to support the other end FEA of standalone ladder with frame FEA of the whole ladder support
