2. Service Learning Project Each grade level has been charged with planning and implementing a SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT during the school year. Education + Giving= Service Learning

3. Service Learning Project One Team One Dream plans to kick off the SERVICE LEARNING project with our HUNGER RELIEF initiative. According to feedingamerica.org, 48 million Americans struggle with hunger on a daily basis.

4. Perfect Fit: NC State Fair Hunger Relief Day! On Thursday, October 22, patrons can bring 5 cans of Food Lion brand canned food for FREE admission! *This helps cut the field trip costs in half; only leaving the cost of travel ($12) Please note: While Food Lion is the event sponsor, ANY brand of canned items will be accepted

5. Service Learning Project (Part 2) Service Learning Project - Service projects will be conducted through ELA classes -Learners will use what they’ve learned in their WHAT’S TRENDING I-RESEARCH units to research HUNGER – both nationally and globally -Students will work in hybrid groups (Stangle/Sanderlin core mixed groups) to create 30-second PSA commercials on HUNGER -Each PSA is expected to incorporate knowledge from ALL 4 core areas (ELA, Math, SS and Science) *Details will be given in ELA during project time. -PSA’s will be shared with grades 4-7 to determine the winning PSA. The team creating the winning PSA will receive a prize

6. Service Learning Project (Part 3) Friendly Competition: -PSAs will be created on Wednesday (10/14) and Friday (10/16) and shared with Lincoln Homerooms 10/19-10/21. HRs will vote on their favorite PSAs and donate their raised canned foods to the group producing their favorite PSA -The group producing the top PSA will receive a prize ! *ALL raised cans will be donated on 10/22 at the NC State Fair

7. How is it SERVICE LEARNING? -8 th graders will work TOGETHER to RESEARCH an important GLOBAL issue (hunger). -8 th graders will create (8) PSAs, or public service announcements, to share with grades 4-7 at Lincoln -8 th graders will encourage grades 4-7 to join them in raising FOOD LION CANNED FOOD ITEMS to donate at the NC State Fair

The field trip particulars… Cost: You have 2 options: 1)Option #1: $17.00  Includes travel and covers cost of 5 canned food items 2)Option #2: $12.00  Includes travel ONLY; student will need to bring in 5 Food Lion canned food items by 10/19 as part of this option -ALL of this information was outlined on the permission form 3) ALL funds are due 10/19/15 *Cost does NOT include TICKETS or FOOD at the fair! Students will need to bring additional monies for tickets and food!
