Victory!? The French and Russian armies finally fight in Moscow and Napoleon is victorious. Napoleon takes control of the capital city and waits to negotiate terms for a Russian surrender.

Returning Home The French suffered greatly in the course of their retreat; the Army had begun as over 650,000 frontline troops, but made it home with less than 40,000. In total, French losses in the campaign were 610,000 against about 400,000 Russian casualties and several hundred thousand civilian deaths.

Napoleon is Surrounded Heartened by Napoleon's losses in Russia: Prussia, Russia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Austria joined to fight against him. The French army loses to a force twice its size at the Battle of Nations in 1813 Napoleon suffered over 120,000 casualties. Something he never recovered from.
