3 Paraphrase Arise Afrika, Arise is about AIDS spreading through sexual intercourse and how people have died over the disease AIDS that have been spread. The people of Afrika try to make a pact to stop the spread of AIDS and encourage abstinence. Many men and women have died from the disease AIDS, that is why the people of Afrika are trying to make a pact.

4 Connotation  “a dead man wears a casket” Is a part in the poem that means the dead man is in the casket and will remain there forever because of the disease AIDS.  “Today AIDS laughed with reddened teeth” this is another part of the poem which means in this day of age AIDS are laughing at the people who have died from AIDS. They wouldn’t use protection.

5 Attitude  Poet- the poet is trying to get across to the readers that AIDS is spreading more and more each day, and Afrika needs to reduce this.  Speaker- the speaker tries to get a pact going to stop the spread because he realizes that Afrikans are spreading AIDS.

6 Shifts The story started out angry and frustrated because AIDS was striking badly and no one was doing anything about it.
