Timeline Golden Age (546-479 B.C.) -Musical culture flourished in Ancient Greece because in Greek society, culture and art was highly important. -Music was a part of a presentation such as poetry. 6th century B.C. -Music was used in drama 5th cent. B.C.- classical style of composition decayed. Fall of Athens(404 B.C)- Fall of music, anti-intellectual period against all classical arts (drama, dance, literature and poetry.) -Finally, ancient Greece music became insignificance under the Roman rule. -Around 320 B.C.rise of professional musicians turned into a new and advanced style of music that had never been seen before. -Musicians just played alone and did not accompany poems and theater.

4. Greek Music As Greek society developed, so did Greek music. Music was an essential part of Greek life. Music was in religious festivals, marriage and funeral rites and banquet gatherings. Performance Performers sang poetry and were accompanied by Pipers: They blew into reeds called Auloi,an instrument that was pierced by holes along the length, making the musician change the pitch of a note by holding down one or more holes with his fingers. Aulos, translation=flute Every Greek, no matter what class looked forward to performing and listening music. Women arranged musical arranged musical evenings in private quarters. “Shepherds piped their flocks, sailors used oars to beat time to their sea chats, teachers taught musical skills to their charges.”

7. Harmony, Melodies, Rhythm and Modes Music was entirely monodic, there was no harmony. Music was centered on melody, rhythm and mode. In western music we know modes as “major” and “ minor.” 5 modes: Ionian, Aeolian, Lydian, Dorian and Phryian. These modes were put together in a relationship between notes that no other mode could produce alone. Dorian= material, Phrygian=engendered contentment, Mixolydian(1 of the sub modes) = plaintive, Ionian softly alluring/ seduction easier. Music sounded like a medieval music of Europe, importance of cathy, easily sing able melodies, exaggerated rhythms, and simple instrumental accompaniment.
