Linear Motion Chapter 2 Taken from http://www.physicsclassroom.com/Class/ on August 2012

Kinematics the science of describing the motion of objects using words, diagrams, numbers, graphs, and equations.

Vector & Scalar Quantities Scalars are quantities that are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone. Vectors are quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction.

Practice Problems a.5 m b.30 m/sec, East c.5 mi., North d.20 degrees Celsius e.256 bytes f.4000 Calories

Practice Problems a.5 m - scalar b.30 m/sec, East - vector c.5 mi., North - vector d.20 degrees Celsius - scalar e.256 bytes - scalar f.4000 Calories - scalar

Distance & Displacement Distance is a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion. Displacement is a vector quantity that refers to "how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall change in position.

Distance Vs Displacement Distance traveled: 4 m + 2 m + 4 m + 2 m = 12 m Displacment: How far was the end point from the start point? = 0 m Start End

Determine the distance traveled by the skier below. The skier covers a distance of (180 m + 140 m + 100 m) = 420 = 400 m

Determine the displacement of the skier below. The skier’s displacement is 140 = 100 m, rightward

Determine the distance traveled by the coach on the sidelines. The coach covers a distance of (35 yds + 20 yds + 40 yds) = 95 yards = 1.0 x 10 2 yds

Determine the displacement of the coach on the sidelines. The coach’s displacment is 55 yards, left

Speed & Velocity Speed is a scalar quantity that refers to "how fast an object is moving." Speed can be thought of as the rate at which an object covers distance. Velocity is a vector quantity that refers to "the rate at which an object changes its position."

Instantaneous & Average Speed Instantaneous Speed - the speed at any given instant in time. Average Speed - the average of all instantaneous speeds; found simply by a distance/time ratio.

Average Speed & Average Velocity average speed = distance / time average velocity = change in position / time = displacement / time v = d / t

Determine the average speed of the skier below. The skier has an average speed of (420 m) / (3 min) = 140 = 100 m/min

Determine the average velocity of the skier below. The skier’s average velocity is (140 m, right) / (3 min) = 46.7 = 50 m/min, right

Determine the average speed of the coach on the sidelines. The coach covers a distance of (95 yds / 10 mins) = 9.5 yd/min

Determine the average velocity of the coach on the sidelines. The coach covers a distance of (55 yds, left / 10 mins) = 5.5 yd/min, left

Acceleration Acceleration is a vector quantity that is defined as the rate at which an object changes its velocity. An object is accelerating if it is changing its velocity. Acceleration = change in velocity / time a= ∆v / t a= (v f – v i ) / t
