What is diabetes mellitus? A chronic condition associated with abnormally high blood sugar Results from either deficiency of or a resistance to insulin- a hormone produced by the pancreas whose function is to lower blood sugar.

Types of Diabetes Mellitus Type 1: insulin dependent; juvenile on set Type 2; adult on set diabetes; non-insulin dependant

Symptoms The same for types one and two excessive secretion of urine, thirst, weight loss, and tiredness

Treatment Diet and physical activity Insulin injections Oral agents

Complications Diabetic retinopathy: a leading cause of blindness and visual disability Kidney failure Heart disease Diabetic neuropathy Diabetic foot disease

Prevention Moderate reduction in weight Half an hour of walking daily Balanced diet
