Silent Discussion Directions You will write a response to a given writing prompt on your note-taking outline. Leave your notes on your desk. Move your body to another student’s desk and read his/her response. Respond to that student’s response in writing. Move desks again so that you are reading two new responses. Add your own response in writing as the third voice in the silent discussion. Repeat the process with a new writing prompt.

Prompt 1 When do you think African Americans were most “free”—during slavery, Reconstruction, or Jim Crow? Explain your answer and give an example.

Prompt 2 What form of racism was most common during Jim Crow? (Individual? Institutional? Internalized?) Give a specific example from our study of the time period.

Prompt 3 We have learned about several black leaders during Jim Crow (Ida B. Wells, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, and others). Which leader do you most admire, and why?

Prompt 4 African Americans resisted Jim Crow in a variety of ways. What form of resistance was most powerful during this time period? Why? Give a specific example.
