Jim Crow Review: Silent Discussion African American History Ms. Bauer

Silent Discussion Directions  You will write a response to a given writing prompt on your note-taking outline.  Leave your notes on your desk. Move your body to another student’s desk and read his/her response.  Respond to that student’s response in writing.  Move desks again so that you are reading two new responses. Add your own response in writing as the third voice in the silent discussion.  Repeat the process with a new writing prompt.

Prompt 1 When do you think African Americans were most “free”—during slavery, Reconstruction, or Jim Crow? Explain your answer and give an example.

Prompt 2 What form of racism was most common during Jim Crow? (Individual? Institutional? Internalized?) Give a specific example from our study of the time period.

Prompt 3 We have learned about several black leaders during Jim Crow (Ida B. Wells, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, and others). Which leader do you most admire, and why?
