Fisheries Section Established in 1972 Objectives: To encourage the rearing of fish in private ponds, rivers, dams and lakes so as to develop an additional source of protein in the population and to increase income. To promote the rearing of fish by providing services to farmers in the construction of fishponds, the stocking of ponds and extension advice on the rearing of fish

Fisheries goal To increase fish production and consumption at both household and national level so as to address the issues of food and nutritional security and poverty alleviation. Fish and fisheries resources 5 major rivers Has 53 indigenous fish species and 7 exotic Dams: range in size from a few large ones such as Maguga dam with a capacity of 332 Mm 3 through many medium sized reservoirs of 6 – 70 Mm 3 to a larger number of small reservoirs less than 6Mm 3.
