2 Objectives Know the purpose of forestry Learn where you can find resources for teaching Know the questions and what each one consist of Understand the scoring system and things that qualify for a tiebreaker

3 Purpose of Forestry To familiarize the students to the efforts in the conservation of soil and water with stressing proper use of woodlands. It also creates awareness and understanding of the value of properly managed woodlands. Designed around curriculum Forestry and Wood Technology Introduction to a degree in forestry in college SFA, Texas FFA State Forestry Contest. April 2015

4 Forestry Team 3 or 4 members, team ranking is determined by combing scores of top three students on each team Student can participate in National FFA or 4-H Forestry event without being disqualified from participating in Texas Woodland Clinic Advance from each of the NRCS Districts. Top 5 teams from Area FFA Contest that have NRCS Forestry District within area can also qualify for state.

5 The Event Components 13 questions Hardwood, Pine, and Wood ID (10, 10, and 5 points) Wood Products (10 points) Timber-Forage-Wildlife Relationships (10 points) Tree Measurements and Volume (10 points) Site Index and Productivity (7 points) Rate of Growth (3 points) Selective Thinning by D+6 (10 points) Cull Tree Removal/TSI ( 5 points) Pine Regeneration (5 points) Site Management Concerns (5 points) Compass and Pacing (10 points)

6 Scoring and Tiebreakers Scoring Total Points Individual = 100 Team = 300 Tiebreakers Volume calculation closest to correct volume winner Still tied, team score on hardwood ID question Still tied, team score on selective thinning question Still tied, team with highest alternate score wins Same for individual tiebreakers Angelina County Fair

7 How to Prepare The Texas State Woodland Clinic Manual Look at pictures and at live trees up-close Clinics or contest that are before the Area/State contest Practice Know the information

8 Summary Know the purpose of forestry Introduce students to efforts of conservation and proper management, and a career they could take with them into college Learned where you can find resources for teaching Texas State Woodland Clinic Manual Know the questions and what each one consist of 13 questions, many parts to each! Understand the scoring system and things that qualify for a tiebreaker Individual has 100 points, Team has 300 points. Tiebreakers use a set of questions to determine winner in either team or individual.
