3 Learning Objective In this unit, you: study vocabulary related to telephones and telephoning; learn to make a phone call in English; learn to talk about your attitudes towards cell phones.

4 Warm-up questions Do you often make phone calls in English? Do you have a cell phone? What’s your attitudes towards cell phones? (important, useful, necessary, convenient, save time… unnecessary, annoying, unhealthy, emit radiation…)

5 Lesson A Telephoning Vocabulary related to telephones and telephoning: answering machine area code telephone (phone) directory cell phone cord international call local call long-distance call public telephone receiver phone number

6 Other related words: enter a phone number leave a message/take a message make a phone call/receive a phone call answer a phone/hang up a phone dial a wrong number receive a phone bill pay a phone bill pick up the receiver/put down the receiver get a busy signal hear a busy signal

7 Listening Listen to Track 3-6-1 and do Exercise A on P89. Listen again and do Exercise B on P89. Imitate the conversation.

8 Useful expressions Making a phone call (1): --Hello? --Hello. Can/May I speak to Ann, please? I’d like to speak to Ann, please. Is Ann in? Is that Ann, please? --Yes, speaking. Who’s calling please? May I ask who’s calling? --This is Tim.

9 Making a phone call (2): --Hello? --Hello. Can I speak to Ann, please? --Hold on, please./Hold on a minute./Please hold the line./One moment, please. I’m sorry, she’s not in at the moment. Would you like to leave a message?/May I take a message? --Ok, tell her that Tim called./Could you ask her to call me back when she returns?

10 Speaking Listen to Track 3-6-3 and practice the conversation. Pair work: Imagine you are calling a friend at their office, make a conversation based on the model dialogue. A: Hello. Ms. Cabrini, please. B. I’m sorry. She’s not here. May I take a message? A: Yes, tell her Tad called. B: Tad? Could you spell that, please? A: Certainly. You spell it T as in tango, A as in apple, D as in Donald.

11 Communication Group work: Evan is twelve years old. He wants a cell phone. But each person-”father”, “mother”, “doctor” holds a different attitude towards this. Now role play the situation and come to a decision. Listen to Track 3-6-4 and pay attention to the expressions they use.

12 Lesson B Crazy for cell phones Part 1 Present new words: browse, download, privacy, running late… Watch the Video Part 1 and finish the exercises on P99. Watch the Video Part 1 again and imitate the material.

13 Lesson B Crazy for cell phones Part 2 Preview: look at the pictures and do exercises on P100 Watch the Video Part 2 and finish the exercises on P101-102 Watch the Video Part 2 again and play roles to imitate the scene.
