#4 Form, Structure, and Plot 4. Form, Structure, and Plot *For Form and Structure, consider how is the novel composed? If it is broken into two sections, what is the significance of one section over the other? You will have to do some critical thinking here. For instance, Dicken’s work was serialized instead of being published as a finished novel, so he could reach a wider audience. This of course added to the cliff-hanger aspect of his writing. * You will also need to consider literary elements that affect the form/structure. For example, flashbacks, chronological order of events, foreshadowing, Non-linearism
8
Plot continued For Plot, you should consider the basic elements of a story: basic situation or exposition, rising action or complications, climax, and resolution or denouement. Use the terms! You do not need to retell the entire story!
9
#5 Point of View 5. Point of View *Consider the effect of the point of view on characters and the story. Provide examples for this analytical aspect of the assignment. Also, consider is the story narrated in the past or present tense? What effect does this have on the narrative?

Characters Continued Next, you will give the following information for all of the major characters and more notable minor characters in the novel. Synopsis of character: Age: Three descriptive adjectives: Appearance: Personality: Function in the novel: Quote and Significance of Quote:
12
#7 Setting 7. Setting * Consider at what time does the novel take place? * Consider the main settings. Choose two to three to explore in analytical depth. In other words, why are these settings important to the development of the novel? Why are they significant? Consider symbolism, conflict, character development, epiphany, thematic development.
13
#8 Themes 8. Themes (your own but avoid cliches) *Choose three themes from the novel to explore. Start each paragraph with a theme statement You will need a large paragraph for each theme. Include textual evidence to support your theme, and you may also want to connect the theme to another work of literature we have read in AP 12. Ultimately, consider what is the author trying to teach the reader?
14
#9 Style 9. Style (needs a citation) *Consider what do other critics and authors have to say about your author? (You may consult an outside source for this section) *Consider the way the author writes and how it is unique. What purpose does their style achieve? Consider adjectives when defining style, but you must also provide examples from the novel that are exemplary of the author’s style.
15
#10 Diction 10. Diction * What types of diction does the author use? Formal, informal, neutral…. What does this do for the novel? * Consider figurative language as well and their purpose and effect.
16
Diction continued * You must provide three significant example passages (not a quote) and three paragraphs of analysis where you analyze the function of diction in the selected passages. Closely examine their word choice in the selected passages and explore the significance of the words they have selected to use. *you may provide an appendix (see example)

Symbols- object, action or event. *Consider three dominant symbols being used in the novel. The format is the same as imagery
20
Figurative Language cont. 14. Figurative Language *Consider allusions (Biblical or mythological, simile, person- ification, metaphor, etc….. * the format is the same as imagery
21
Irony, Tone, and Quotes 15. Irony *Highlight two uses of irony (verbal, situational, or dramatic) In an analytical paragraph consider how the irony contributes to the work. Provide textual examples. Sub components-paradox and hyperbole. 16. Tone * Highlight three tones used throughout the novel. Highlight shifts in tone and when they occur. For these three analytical paragraphs, examine diction and connotation. 17. Select three memorable quotes * Explain the significance of the quotation in paragraph form Consider, what does the quote embody, suggest, teach, or imply? What does it add to the story?
