Year 2 Assessments: Information Session Tuesday 12 th April 2016

Overview of session Changes to the National Curriculum and expectations Outline of mathematics, reading, writing and GPS tests What to expect over the next few weeks at school How to help your child prepare

Context New National Curriculum introduced in September 2015. Now statutory for Years 1-6. No levels in the new system. New style tests and teacher assessments at the end of both KS1 and KS2. We no longer see the paper before children.

Overview of KS1 TestsTeacher Assessments Reading GPSWriting Maths Science Tests can be carried out at any point during May. Spread out throughout a week to keep them light for children.

Mathematics 2 papers: - Paper 1: arithmetic (20 minutes) - Paper 2: reasoning paper (35 minutes) Arithmetic- more straightforward calculations. Reasoning- applying mathematical knowledge to word problems and writing explanations. Not strictly timed.

Example Arithmetic questions

Example Reasoning questions

Writing No test Based on judgement across a broad range of writing across the curriculum. Writing used for assessments is not done under ‘test conditions’. Big focus on grammatical accuracy, correct spellings and correct punctuation. 5 domains: sentence structure & punctuation, text organisation, effect on audience, spelling, handwriting.

Reading Similar structure to previous years... Paper 1 & Paper 2. Each paper has 2 text types- fiction and non-fiction. Not strictly timed, but generally takes between 30-40 minutes per paper. Emphasis on comprehension.

Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling (GPS) In line with the increased expectation on grammatical accuracy in writing. 2 parts to the test: - 1 spelling test. - 1 short answer paper. Not strictly timed (around 20 minutes). Forms part of teacher assessments for writing.

Example GPS questions

What to expect... In school, we have already been working through ‘test style’ questions in a supportive manner. Tests will be carried out in a very informal manner at some point during May. Children will be involved in various fun activities along with the tests- generally they enjoy them! Teacher Assessment is just as important!

How can I help my child? Practise spelling Learn times tables and number bonds Practise mental maths Have fun writing at home to practise grammar and sentence structure A little bit of home practise is sensible but we will prepare them for the tests in school.
