1 One-Minute Speeches & Group Practice Time Wednesday, May 13, 2015 Honors MYP

2 Objective, Agenda, & Homework Objective: Students will practice their speaking skills in a one-minute speech and practice speech. Agenda: – Latin Roots Due – Grades – One-Minute Speeches (Formative) – Groups: Practice Speeches Homework: – Past Due: Advocate letters mailed/emailed by Monday, May 11. – To Do: Practice your 5-7 minute speeches. Study for Latin roots final.

3 Latin Roots 66-70 Due Today! Be sure your name is on your assignment. Also be sure that you have the roots in your notebook. – 66: mit, miss, mise = send, let go – 67: ten, tent, tin, tain = hold, grasp – 68: tract = draw – 69: vert, vers, vort, vors = turn – 70: sens, sent = feel, be aware ((physically) Begin studying for your final. All 70 Latin roots will be on it.

4 Review: PVLEGS Poise – Appear calm & confident – Avoid distracting behaviors – Stance & movement Voice – Speak clearly (don’t mumble) – Use a volume level just right for the space Life – Express passion & emotion – Have an expressive face Eye Contact – Connect visually with the audience – Look at EACH audience member – Do NOT read your notecards Gestures – Use hand motions – Move your body Speed – Talk with an appropriate pace Not too fast Not too slow – Use pauses for effect & emphasis

5 One-Minute Speeches You will practice the first minute of your 5-7 minute formal speech. I will cut you off after 60 seconds. – You need to evaluate how far into your speech you are. Are you on track to speak for 5-7 minutes? – I will evaluate your speaking skills. Tomorrow, you will receive the feedback to help you prepare. During your speech… – Focus on delivering your speech the way you will May 14-22. – Focus on PVLEGS!

6 Group Practice In groups of 3, please practice your entire speech. One person in each group will need to have a phone to time the speeches (5-7 minutes). Give feedback on the following: – Are the 3 causes or effects clear? – Did the speaker use taglines to cite their sources? – Is there enough logos and pathos? – Are the rhetorical devices clearly evident? – What speaking skills do they need to improve?
