2 Causes of War British impressments – forcing U.S. citizens to serve in British military. British gave military aid to Am. Indians on frontier. – Tecumseh, Shawnee Chief “War Hawks” – new political party – urged President Madison to declare war on Britain. – Federalists were against the war!

3 High Points New U.S. warship, USS Constitution, had some key victories. U.S. won Battle of Lake Erie – Oliver Hazard Perry U.S. defeated Tecumseh on the frontier – William Henry Harrison “We have met the enemy and they are ours” Oliver Hazard Perry

5 General Andrew Jackson Victories on the Frontier Battle of Horseshoe Bend – Defeated the Creek Indians, forcing them to give up millions of acres of their land. Battle of New Orleans – Why important? – Fought AFTER the war ended!

6 Low Points U.S. tried to invade Canada with 3 separate armies. – All 3 failed. Oops. The British then invaded the U.S. and attacked the capital. – They burned it to the ground. Double Oops.

7 Ending the War Treaty of Ghent -- The treaty had been signed on December 24, 1814 before the Battle of New Orleans took place. Each nation returned to the area it conquered.
