3.  The fortress first built by William the Conqueror has served as a citadel, royal palace, seat of goverment, a prison.  The Tower now protects the Crown Jewels.  „Beefeaters“ who assist today ´s visitors still wear the uniforms which date from Tudor times.

4.  The Abbey was founded in the 11th century by the king Edward the Confessor.  Coronations of every king or queen spanning 900 years have been held here. It is the burial place of kings.
