What Are Vascular Seed-Bearing Flowering Plants? Vascular seed-bearing flowering plants are plants that have certain kinds of tissues called xylem and phloem to help them get water and nutrients. They also have seeds that produce fruits, and can make flowers to help them pollinate and reproduce. The two groups of vascular seed-bearing flowering plants are monocots and dicots.

What are Cotyledons? A cotyledon is a food source for a developing plant embryo that can become the plant’s first leaves. The number of cotyledons determines classification of an angiosperm.

Monocots The four characteristics of monocots are that they have one cotyledon, they are usually in groups of three flower parts, their leaf veins go up and down, and their bundles of xylem and phloem are scattered. Some examples of monocots are palm trees, corn, grass, and irises.

Dicots Four characteristics of dicots are that they have two cotyledons, they usually are in groups of four or five flower parts, their leaf veins branch off in many directions, and their bundles of xylem and phloem are arranged in a ring. Some examples of dicots are apple trees, roses, beans, and peanuts.

Angiosperms Angiosperms are vascular seed-bearing flowering plants. The word Angiosperm comes from the Greek words “Angi” which means “enclosed” and “sperma” which means “seed.”

Parts of a Vascular Seed-bearing flowering plant Sepal- In a flower one of the outermost rings of modified leaves that protect the flower bud. Petal- One of the ring or rings of the usually bright colored, leaf-shaped parts of a flower. Stamen- The male reproductive structure of a flower that produces pollen and consists of an anther at the tip of the filament. Anther- contains pollen and is a sac located at the tip of the filament. Filament- Stalks that connects and holds up the anther. Carpel- contains the stigma, style, and ovary.

Parts of a Vascular Seed-bearing flowering plant (Continued) Stigma- The tip of the carpel that is sticky in order to catch pollen. Style- The slender, neck-like potion of the carpal that leads to the ovary. Ovary- In flowering plants, the lower part of the pistil that produces eggs in the ovules.
