2 There are 2 main types of coffee beans grown globally, Arabica and Robusta In the twelve months ending July 2012, exports of Arabica beans totalled 65.18 million bags compared to 68.12 million bags last year; whereas Robusta bean exports amounted to 40.72 million bags compared to 37.12 million bags.

3 Biggest Coffee Producers for 2011 1. Brazil - 43.484 bags 2. Vietnam - 18.500 3. Ethiopia - 9.804 4. Indonesia - 8.750 5. Colombia - 8.500 6. India - 5.370 7. Peru - 5.000 8. Mexico - 4.500 9. Honduras - 4.300 10. Guatemala - 3.450 (in 000 bags)

4 The biggest consumers are: (in kilogrammes per capita) 1kilogram = 2.2 pounds 1. Luxembourg - 25.55 2. Finland - 12.62 3. Switzerland - 9.15 4. Norway - 8.99 5. Sweden - 8.28 US consumption is 4.17, on the same level with Spain or Portugal. For comparison here are Italy, with 5.98, Japan with 3.33, Canada with 5.80, and Romania with 3.79. Russian Federation has one of the lowest percentage, only 1.58, on the same level as Ireland and Poland.

9 Original Supply Chain 1 Growers 2 Intermediaries-buy cherries and sell to processors or brokers. 3 Processors-change cherries to green coffee beans. 4 Brokers-supply beans to roasters. 5 Roasters-roast green beans according to taste (Italian is the highest roast) 6 Retailers-sell us coffee beans or cups of coffee. Fair Trade pay fair wages and bypass exploitative middlemen by working directly with producers, they are able to cut costs and return a greater percentage of the retail price to the producers. Fair Trade benefits farmers and consumers, by the environmental benefits acheived through fair trade practices. Fairtrade pay a Premium to growers = the sum of money paid on top of the agreed price of the coffee for investment in social, environmental or economic development projects

10 Neknasi Coffee Growers Cooperative Founded in 2008, Neknasi Coffee Growers Cooperative Society is comprised of approximately 440 coffee-producing members located in the Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. The association is made up of eight villages and approximately 43 tribes. It is estimated that over 2000 people benefit from services provided by the association. The association produces an average of 120 tonnes of green bean each year, and the Board estimates it will increase to 300 tonnes by the end of 2012. Neknasi is developing a plan to use its first Fairtrade Premium to expand and improve its current water supply system to include coffee gardens Close to members’ villages.

Kokako Organic Coffee Roasters Are a dedicated Fairtrade Organic Coffee roastery based in Auckland Hummingbird Coffee pay a social premium of US10 cents per pound. Hummingbird Coffee's contribution in 2008 to the Ethiopian Oromia Co- op was $US14,246. As a guide, a new school costs $US30,000 to build and holds 400 children. This means in this co-op alone we enabled almost 200 more children to attend school.
