Common Ailments of the Respiratory System Common AilmentsCauseDescription 1. AsthmaTriggered by allergies: dust fumes and other air pollutants, and changes in climate. A condition where a person has difficulty in breathing. It is accompanied by coughing and wheezing sound when breathing out. 2. RhinitisTriggered by allergies: dust fumes and other air pollutants, and changes in climate. Characterized by itchiness in the nasal passage, nasal discharge and sneezing. It may also accompany cold, itchiness of eyes and ears.

Common AilmentsCauseDescription 3. BronchitisDue to infection by bacteria or a virus. Characterized by persistent coughing and sometimes fever. It is caused by the inflammation of the upper respiratory tract. 4. PneumoniaUsually caused by virus or bacteria. Characterized by cough that produces a yellow green phlegm, fever accompanied by chills and shortness of breath. The condition may last for several days Abnormal sounds can be heard in the lung using a stethoscope.

ColdCaused by a virus that attacks the mucus membrane and throat. It is very contagious. It is marked by sneezing, runny nose, coughing, sore throat and sometimes fever and head ache. 7. Tuberculosis (TB)Caused by bacteria known as Tubercle bacilli. It is a highly communicable disease. Common symptoms are loss of appetite, fever and sweating at night, loss of weight and coughing (sometimes coughing up blood.
