4. ALS – Lou Gehrig’s Disease Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Rare and incurable disease of the nervous system Gradually destroys the nerves that control the muscles. Nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord degenerate and die – means the lose of ability to transmit impulses to the muscles. Progressive weakness and paralysis Usually death occurs when the muscles that control breathing stop functioning (2-5 years from first symptoms) Named after baseball player (NY Yankees 1925-1939) was diagnosed with ALS.
