Sophomore Honors English!

Our Objective: Sophomore Honors English is designed to improve advanced students’ language arts skills at an accelerated level. prepare students for AP English This course will fulfill district and state graduation requirements and prepare students for AP English.

What We Do: Students will read many complex works from multiple genres, including non-fiction, short stories, novels, poetry, and drama. Students will also be expected to complete various writing tasks related to these works, including essays, speeches, research papers, presentations, and multimedia projects.

Your Skills Now: Successful students will enter English 10H with a mastery of: –Paragraph development: strong topic sentence, concrete details, quotation integration and use, textual analysis, and concluding sentence –FLUENCY in English grammar and mechanics –Verb tenses, Subject/verb agreement –Proper sentence structure –Dashes, commas, semi-colons, colons, hyphens –Passive versus active voice –Thesis statement that covers the topic of the essay –Essay structure, including introductions and conclusions –Critical Reading: characterization analysis, thematic analysis

Units of Study: 1.SUMMER READING!!!! A. Selected chapters from King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green B. Any 2 non-fiction works from our list of options See full list on Ms. Hatheway’s Fusion page. Students will be tested on this in the first week of school. While their notes and annotations will not be collected for points, the responsible student will prepare for school by keeping records of the characters and plots in the fiction and memoirs, as well as the authors’ main arguments and their supporting evidence in the expository non-fiction selections from the list.

Units of Study: 2. ARCHETYPES Texts: Arthurian tales, fairy tales, various short stories –Learn to perform authors’ purpose analysis –Learn to write authors’ purpose thesis statements –Learn to identify archetypes and connect them to authors’ purposes –Learn to perform New Historic and feminist analysis –Review how to organize supporting paragraphs and essays –Write and deliver a speech that includes all of the above analyses

Units of Study: 3. ANCIENT TRAGEDIES –Texts: Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, Antigone by Sophocles, Medea by Euripides, “Poetics” by Aristotle –Learn to perform tragic analysis –Learn to annotate texts –Learn to write compare/contrast essays –Write a timed, in-class compare/contrast, tragic analysis essay

Units of Study: 4. MODERN NOVEL Texts: The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Lord of the Flies by William Golding –Learn to perform passage analyses emphasizing various literary devices such as symbols, diction, syntax, tone, and imagery –Learn to answer AP-style multiple choice questions –Write timed, in-class passage analyses –Prepare and perform final semester project

Units of Study: 5. OUTSIDE READING –One text of teacher’s choice per quarter. –Timed writings and multiple choice assessments to follow.

Grading in Sophomore Honors English Nightly homework, about an average of 6 hours per week for the prepared* student Writing will account for at least 55% of their grade Active, verbal class participation will account for at least 10% of their grade Homework, quizzes, projects, and class work account for the rest of their grade All grades will be earned for the production of high quality work; students are not granted points simply for good behavior or attendance, or perfunctory efforts. It is unlikely that the student who did not earn an A or a B in regular freshman English or an A, B, or C in freshman honors English will earn an A, B, or C in sophomore honors English. * See slide #4

The Successful 10H Student Loves reading! –Does not rush through texts or depend on Sparknotes –Reads texts closely for details –Spends time deciphering challenging texts Loves thinking! –Always considers the texts they read and the world around them –Comes to class prepared with discussion questions and ideas Loves writing! –Writes clear sentences, paragraphs, and essays –Can organize original ideas into written work
