2  Nonpartisan policy and program resource center located at The George Washington University.  Established in 2001 to explore ways to strengthen the well being of children and youth through effective programs and health care services in schools.  Core support provided by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools

3 The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Oral Health Initiatives Caring for Kids: Expanding Mental and Dental Health Services through School-Based Health Centers Pipeline, Profession and Practice: Community-Based Dental Education Program State Action for Oral Health Access State Action for Oral Health Access

4 Caring for Kids: Expanding Dental and Mental Health Services Through School-Based Health Centers Goals  Increase available dental and mental health care services organized by school-based health centers; and  Connect these services to relevant public and private programs and policies to assure that services are coordinated with existing programs.

5 $3.4 Million Available Over 3 Years 15 sites funded 7 dental health sites 8 mental health sites Average $225,000 for 3 years

6  5 Comprehensive Programs These programs are staffed by dental hygienists and dentists and provide cleanings, x-rays, and restoration. Some of these programs have established permanent dental suites, other use portable operatories.  Methodist Health Care Ministries  Montefiore Medical Center  New York and Presbyterian/Columbia  Samuel U. 7 Dental Health Program Models  2 School-Community Partnership Programs School-based health centers partnering with community providers to offer both preventive and restorative care. The SBHC will provide intensive oral health education for children and their parents and screen and case manage students. Participating community dentists will provide restoration and other needed services.  Children’s Hospital of NJ  HEALS, Inc.

8 Anticipated Outcomes  Coordinate and integrate dental services into the school-based health centers  Expand oral health services to underserved populations  Develop clinical preceptorships for community dentistry  Identify and target policies that can increase access to dental services for children and youth  Disseminate information to policy makers, the public and educators
