2. What is Alcoholism  It is a disease where a person can’t control how much they drink.  Caused by changes of chemicals in the brain.  gamma-aminobutyric acid = controls impulsiveness  Dopamine = Makes you feel good

3. How many Children are affected?  18 million kids under the age of 18 are living with an alcoholic parent  Family disease

4. Emotions in a child of an alcoholic  Shame  Anger  Confusion  Guilt  Depression

5. Problems in Child Growth  Social problems  Troubles in school  Trust issues  They act out  More likely to become an alcoholic

6. What can we do as a Teacher  Be there for the student  Show them that we care  Talk to the student  Provide resources such as Children of Alcoholics  Recommend Counseling  Report any and all abuse and neglect!!!

7. Most Importantly…  Make sure your students know they don’t have to follow the same path as their parents.  It’s not their fault.
