Know what you are writing about Know why your are writing Provide purpose, do not provide what you know, instead use explanations No mechanical errors Use facts instead of opinions Use CORRECT grammar Punctuation is in the right place Spelling is correct

Stay on topic Stay short, sweet and to the point Never sacrifice clarity or completeness to gain brevity

Clarity Use short and complete sentences Avoid explaining something that the reader already knows Use simple, familiar words to describe objects Avoid vague words that don’t relate precisely to your topic Use verbs in the active tense Avoid long phrases Select words and phrases that express your exact meaning and can have only one interpretation Use words that bring images to the mind

Coherence Use logical development and arrangement of a subject Think and see the subject as a whole before doing any rough drafts Use outlines and rewrites at this stage

Adhere to a main idea Initial outlines will come in handy Be sure that everything falls in order
