How to prevent this from happening Take care if you’re wearing loose clothing – they can easily catch fire. Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob. Check toasters are clean and placed away from curtains and kitchen rolls. Keep the oven, hob and grill clean and in good working order. A build up of fat and grease can ignite a fire. Don’t put anything metal in the microwave

How to prevent this from happening Unplug appliances when you’re not using them or when you go to bed, unless they’re designed to be left on, like a freezer.

Cigarettes and Smoking Materials

How to prevent this from happening Keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach. Don’t leave a lit cigarette, cigar or pipe lying around. They can easily fall over and start a fire. Always tell a grown up.

Candles

Make sure candles are secured in a proper holder and away from materials that may catch fire – like curtains. Put candles out when you leave the room, and make sure they’re put out completely at night. Use a snuffer or a spoon to put out candles. It’s safer than blowing them out when sparks can fly. Children shouldn’t be left alone with lit candles. How to prevent this from happening

How to prevent this from happening Always use a fire guard Keep items that can easily catch fire safely away from the fire place. Do not use mirrors above the fire place.

Reporting A Fire Dial 999 Caller’s number is passed to the Fire Service Operator You will be asked nature of Emergency Address of the Emergency Any further details e.g. any people involved, further location details Your name will be taken for reassurance Control will provide you with fire survival guidance

Hoax & Arson Hoax or “Malicious” may cost an innocent person their property or even life!! Control can sometimes decide not send fire engines to these callers, but depending on what is said, sometimes a fire engine is sent out. The cost to send a Fire Engine to a hoax call is £3,000 We have the power and technology to identify callers – and cut them off, sometimes the Police will prosecute them
