Higher Apprenticeship – Key Facts The new Apprentice must have at least one the following entry requirements: At least one GCE A Level pass in a relevant scientific/technology/Maths subject. Two AS Level passes are considered equivalent to one A Level pass (Recommendation for two A levels, with a grade C+) An Advanced VCE award in an appropriate engineering/manufacturing/technology topic An EdExcel/BTEC/SCOTVEC National Certificate or Diploma in a science or technology-based subject A Higher Apprenticeship program duration can range from 2 to 4 years, with the recommendation being 3 years. Awareness of Higher Apprenticeships is low, therefore many companies will opt for a “safe” HNC / HND. Higher Apprenticeships consist of 12 Level 4 NVQ units to be delivered in the workplace, and 3 Level 2 PEO units, which must be delivered in a training environment. Higher Apprenticeships are better value for money being spent, tend to have a higher success rate and naturally fit into the potential to complete a full “top up” degree.
