1 Monitoring Report Athletics Scott Brunette, Director of Athletics

2 Mission To promote the academic mission of the school system.

3 Goal To increase participation in extracurricular activities because of all the benefits of participation.

4 Student Participation A total of 8,737 students participated in athletics during the past school year. –4,223 students participated at the middle school level and 4514 participated at the high school level. –24% of our high school students and 42% of our middle school students participated in athletics this past year.

5 School Participation A total of 38 middle schools and 15 high schools participate in athletics. MNPS has approximately 700 athletic coaches in grades 7-12. MNPS academic standards for sports participation exceed those of the TSSAA.

6 State Championships Hillsboro High won State Championships in both football and girls basketball. Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet won State Championships in both boys cross country and boys track.

7 Student Highlights Competing against high school football players from 55 Middle Tennessee public and private students, Bryan Hartzell, Overton High, won the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame “Admiral Lawrence Award” recognizing him as the top scholar-athlete in football in middle Tennessee.

8 Student Highlights Competing against high school basketball players from all Davidson County public and private schools, Ikiya Fletcher, Hunters Lane, won the “Moss-Oliver Award” recognizing her as the top scholar-athlete in girls basketball in Davidson County.

9 Student Highlights Competing against high school basketball players from all Davidson County public and private schools, Russell Slagle, Overton High, won the “Moss-Oliver Award” recognizing him as the top scholar-athlete in boys basketball in Davidson County.

10 Community Partnership With the support of the Tennessee Titans, Stratford High and Pearl- Cohn High have the only two local NFL “Play It Smart” tutoring programs.

11 Area of Need To continue to excel in state competition, student-athlete academic awards, and to increase participation numbers.

12 We Believe Safety and sportsmanship are not negotiable when coaching or participating in athletics at a MNPS school.
