Detail.

DETAIL

DETAIL!

Using figurative language and your descriptive words to place your reader right there in your shoes. Don’t leave any blank spots. Don’t give the reader the opportunity to ask questions: “Where were you going?” “What was the weather like?” “How were you feeling?” What is detail?

Setting I woke up and ran outside. I could not wait to get to the park.

Setting Before I opened my eyes I could tell the bright morning sun was stretching its rays like arms through my window tapping my eyelids to open. I nestled into my bed reveling in the warm cozy sheets, nestled nicely between two giant down pillows. And then it hit me--this was the morning. No, this was the morning.

Animals/Humans I love my cat. He is so pretty, striped, and fluffy and adorable.

Animals/Humans My cat is not just a grey and black striped cat, he is a siberian tiger look-a-like with black stripes that frame his delicate face to camouflage him in “the wild” (also known as: our backyard). The black stripes give way to a soft white underbelly that he will be glad to let you rub--if he trusts you. Last but not least, his tail raccoons itself in black and grey stripes up to the top where the tip is permanently slightly askew after an early incident with a car door.

So What Moments: After that, we packed back into the car and went home. That was my best memory of Kings Dominion.

So What Moment: We stepped off of the roller coaster with our heads spinning and the sudden realization that it was time to go home. With hanging heads, but full hearts, I realized that I had done something amazing today. I had conquered my fear of heights! To this day I have no trouble escalating ladders or climbing trees. On top of conquering my fears, I became closer to my friends and family who helped me relax and face the challenge.

Figurative Language It was a great day. The sun was very hot. My toes were sore.

(Real) Figurative Language It was the greatest day in all of history. (Hyperbole) The sun was so hot, it was as if the rays seemed to burn holes through my skin. (Simile) My toes were falling off from severe pain. (Hyperbole)

Talk the talk--Don’t write the talk. ●LIKE ●SO ●JUST ●OK ●OMG

Dialogue “What are you doing?” asked my mom. “I am going to the park” I said. “I want to see my friend.” I said. “Better wear your jacket” my mom shouted!

Correct Dialogue “What are you doing?” asked my mom. “I am going to the park,” I said. “I want to see my friend.” I walked past her towards the front door. “Better wear your jacket!” my mom shouted. She yanked my jacket off the coat rack and outstretched her arm towards me. I turned around quickly and reached out to grab my coat. “Thanks Mom!” I shouted behind me as I ran towards the door.

Memoir Checklist  Dialogue correctly structured (indented, punctuation, quotation marks)  A strong “so what” moment that shows what the person learned  Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation (make sure all sentences are complete sentences)  Use of figurative language and detail (do you feel as though you are there with them?)  A strong hook that makes you want to read the whole story
