3 What do you think? What is bad behaviour in lessons? Why do some kids misbehave? How do teachers deal with bad behaviour? As a teacher how would you make your class behave? What makes a good teacher?

4 What is bad behaviour in lessons? “Behaviour is no better than satisfactory in a significant number of secondary schools…. Too many lessons are disrupted by poor attitudes of a minority of pupils. …Low level misconduct and inattention, which wore down the patience of teachers and peers so that learning was regularly interrupted” Ofsted October 2007

5 Why do some kids misbehave? Warning: Ofsted chief inspector Christine Gilbert said classroom discipline was being affected by ‘boring’ lessons.

6 How do teachers deal with bad behaviour? Better learning stemming from improvements in teaching, better motivation stemming from improvements in the curriculum and better relationships shifted the balance of students’ attitudes and low-level disruption in lessons fell substantially. 16 CVCC Policy All behaviour and achievement is logged onto SIMS. This allows every teacher to look at every students behaviour and achievement. Tutors play a pivotal role in behaviour and achievement monitoring, you must know what your tutees are up to…… Behaviour and achievement at CVCC –PCC –Praise –Punishment

17 What happens when things go wrong? Remember it doesn’t always go to plan. Stay calm, don’t let them see you wound up Talk about it at the end when things have calmed down, don’t get into a confrontational situation Is it worth a detention? Use support that is available to you Follow school procedure Don’t use blanket punishments

18 Tips to take into school Check out your school policy What are the procedures for support? Get to know your kids (all of them – not just the load popular ones!) Vary your teaching strategies, use pictures, videos, maps, props, toys….. Make lessons fun Where you can differentiate Reward and praise achievement
